Utah residents who don’t watch a lot of programming on streaming services may have been perplexed about what caused a recent car crash in the state, which law enforcement said was due to one driver participating in the Bird Box Challenge.
On January 11, a 17-year-old driver was attempting to operate her vehicle with her beanie over her eyes and caused a car crash, hitting another car and a light pole.
Bird Box is a thriller movie released on Netflix and starring Sandra Bullock in which an unseen presence drives most of society to suicide. Bullock plays a mother of two, named Boy and Girl, who makes a desperate attempt with her children to reach safety. To do this, she blindfolds all three of them so they won’t see the presence. She uses several modes of transportation, like rowing a boat and driving a car, to get where they need to go.
The Bird Box Challenge, therefore, is when someone attempts to do something blindfolded in the same style worn by the movie’s characters or by covering their eyes using other means. At one point, the Twitter account for Netflix had to issue a warning for viewers not to do the Bird Box Challenge because it could put people in the hospital. Still, not everyone has listened.
Luckily, the accident in Utah did not result in any serious injuries or fatalities, but fads like this can put other drivers at serious risk. Hopefully, the movie hype has died down and incidents like this accident will keep other drivers from attempting their own Bird Box Challenge.
