How to keep calm when driving during a pandemic

Among the many daily activities that have been disrupted because of COVID-19, driving definitely feels different. Highways are empty, local streets have socially distancing pedestrians and people on bikes instead of drivers on the road. Freeway signs are encouraging people to stay home and limit driving to only the essential activities.


You might think that less traffic would lead to calmer, safer drivers but the opposite seems to be the case. People are more preoccupied than ever. Our minds are focused on staying safe, keeping our distance, and staying home. When we get behind the wheel, we might be experiencing increased anxiety at the prospect of going into a public place. So what can we do to remain calm and focused as drivers?


Leave yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Hurried driving increases anxiety.

Limit distractions. Turn off your cell phone.

Avoid trying to multitask. Don't eat and drive.

Allow your total focus to be on the road.

Choose calming music or a podcast that is interesting but doesn't require your full focus.

Take deep breaths if you feel yourself beginning to tense up.

Pull-over and take a few moments to de-stress if you find your anxiety reaching a point where you can't operate the vehicle.
